City considers bringing area into Ukiah to gain water and sewer

Ukiah district head Jack Simpson urged the city council to annex the Washington and Helen streets area near 300 homes to obtain water and sewer connections for a new Southside school. Without annexation the district estimates a $20,000 cost for on site facilities. the council conditioned annexation and utility provision on joining the city. The meeting also awarded bids for curbs and gutters on Pine street and for gas and water mains extensions with low bids from Nels Sundeen Company and Peretz Company respectively.

Follows Too Close Truck Hits Auto at Ukiah Bridge

A rear end collision occurred at the Hensley Creek bridge 2.2 miles north of Ukiah on Wednesday around 4 50 PM. Two women in the car, Edith Santoni of New York and Henrietta Hayes of Oakland, were taken to Ukiah General Hospital with minor injuries. The truck driver Chester Callerman of Fortuna was cited for following too close.

Upward Trend Seen in Twelfth Reserve District

Conroy Named Ukiah Area Polio Chairman

Lee Conroy of the Lions Club was named Ukiah area chairman for the emergency polio fund drive to begin August 15. Ten delegates from the Inter-Service Club council form the steering committee, with Clyde Small chairing the county drive shared by Lions Clubs in Willits Laytonville and Fort Bragg. The next meeting was set for 7 30 a m Monday in the Palace.

Ukiah council approves 16000 match for 20000 airport grant

Ukiah city council unanimously votes to match 16000 of federal funds to extend the Municipal Airport runway from 4000 to 5000 feet. The action follows a Washington bill granting 22 million for airport construction nationwide, with California expected to receive about 10 percent. Clyde Small of the Airport Commission says Ukiah leads Calfornia on the CAA priority list and the extension aims to grade drain pave and light the 1000-foot addition, potentially doubling air service if traffic warrants.

Farm Worker Dies by Own Action in Napa County

Walter A. Ward an 88 year old farm worker at Steve Ricetti ranch in Redwood Valley committed death by own action in Napa county yesterday afternoon. A note found in his cabin read that he wished cremation at the Chapel of the Chimes Santa Rosa and ashes cast on the Russian River with $100 to be supplied by the county welfare department.

Reds Protest Over Airliner Shooting Is Rejected

Washington reports that Red China rejected a second U S protest regarding the July 23 shooting down of a British airliner over the South China Sea near Hainan Island. A State Department spokesman could not say what further steps the United States might take. The rejection was relayed via the British Embassy as Britain handles U S dealings with China due to nonrecognition of the Communist regime. The incident involved six American passengers onboard.
