Connally urges $250 million loan guarantee for Lockheed

Treasury Secretary Connally told a Senate appropriations subcommittee that the government must guarantee $250 million in bank loans to keep Lockheed solvent as it seeks $700 million in new financing for the Tristar project. He said saving Lockheed would protect 25,000 to 30,000 jobs and the nation's largest defense contractor from receivership. Nixon to decide on request within weeks.

Two Santa Rosans injured in Highway 128 mishap

Early Sunday a pickup driven by Richard Penry and his passenger George Wagner, both Santa Rosa residents, sustained injuries when Penry attempted to pass two vehicles and sideswiped a Calistoga station wagon driven by Thomas Kanewske. The pickup then crashed into a tree stump near Flynn Creek five miles west of Navarro. Penry suffered serious injuries. Wagner minor to major injuries. Kanewske was uninjured. The incident remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.

Wednesday rites for Sampietro

Polite Ukiah teen shows honesty by returning wallet

Ukiah police praise 13 year old Jim Scherf of 235 Wildwood Drive for finding a wallet near the courthouse and turning it into Capt. Arnold Book. The wallet held 261 dollars and papers, and owner William Giovan netti of Knob Hill Road recovered it within an hour. Police say Scherf reflects the town's responsible teenage majority.

Crash injures Ukiah youths on Boonville Road

Two Ukiah youths, Rick Cupples 20 and Don Ray Young 21, suffered minor abrasions when their motorcycle tire blew on Boonville Road seven miles west of the Robinson Creek bridge. A passing motorist took them to Hillside Community Hospital around 7 p.m.

State workers unemployment insurance would cost 6.9 million yearly

HRD estimates covering 211000 workers in state agencies UC and state colleges would cost about 6.9 million annually for unemployment insurance. Regular benefits about 6 million yearly plus 900000 for extended benefits. Bills would extend coverage to hospitals higher education and all state local government workers, raising employer contributions and expanding the fund to 6.46 million workers. The measures await Finance and Insurance Committee hearings with no date set.
