Ukiah Nine Wins Ninth Straight at Novato

Ukiah Wildcats beat Novato 9-3 for their ninth consecutive victory paced by Carl Johnson driving in five runs and Eddie Turner and Johnny Miller providing key hits. Pitcher Ralph Maize allowed three hits with seven strikeouts as Ukiah builds a strong mound staff amid a rain disrupted season and heads to Petaluma next.

Orioles Sweep Yanks as Sky Clears for Orioles

The Orioles swept a doubleheader from the New York Yankees, matching the worst New York start in five years and moving into a tie for second with the White Sox, one game behind the Indians in the American League. Gus Triandos tied an AL record with four passed balls as Roy Sievers and Jim Lemon homered for the Senators, while the Dodgers rose to first in the LA entry with Neal, Furillo, Hodges delivering key blows. Ukiah Falls to Montgomery in Narrow Swim Meet

Ukiah High School swimmers, hampered by the absence of Ron Parker, pressed Montgomery of Santa Rosa but finished short by a slim margin. Bruce Crook and Kit Cleland led Ukiah efforts with strong showings in freestyle events, while Rod Palmer and Don Scaife stood out in diving and butterfly. The late Montgomery relay sweep and a three tenths finish in the final event clinched the Viking victory despite Ukiah’s determination.

Men Golfers Top Little River Here

Ukiah Men's Golf Club won the home match against Little River Golf Club at Ukiah Municipal Golf Course. Bill Clarke led Ukiah with 71, Ralph Cole and Bob Robinson posted 77s, while Carl Monsen led Little River with 82 and Al Mandelli 84. Ukiah eyes Pro-Amateur meets May 31 and June 1.

Drake Relays and Penn Relays Set Top Meet Records

Drake and Penn Relays produced 22 new meet records as the United States showcased sprint strength and depth. Ira Murchison and Bill Woodhouse led sprint wins while Elias Gilbert anchored a 57.5 American record in the shuttle hurdle relay. Illinois set a 3:17.8 sprint medley as George Kerr of Jamaica anchored the final leg. Drake dominated nine of eleven solo events and six of eight relays, Penn claimed two.

Ukiah Rifle Team Loses Title In Shootoff

The Ukiah Rifle and Pistol Club fell from NBL champion after a special shootoff with Santa Rosa at Sebastopol Friday night. Tied 970 apiece after 231 standing points for Santa Rosa and 229 for Ukiah, Santa Rosa won the Creedmoor standing-rule shoot-off to claim the 1950 NBL title. In other news, Chicago White Sox scout Pong Minor, 61, died of a heart seizure in Chicago Saturday night after signing players like Don Kolloway and Orval Grove.

Patterson's Title Defense Spotlight on Week in Ring

Floyd Patterson defends his heavyweight title Friday at Indianapolis Coliseum against Brian London in a 15 round bout seen on NBC with a 75 mile blackout. The fight serves as a tune up for Patterson's June 25 defense versus Ingemar Johansson. London, 24, fights at roughly 200 pounds to Patterson's 186 and is unafraid, despite weak permit from the British Boxing Board. London has 19 knockouts in 26 bouts. Patterson has 24 knockouts in 34 wins. If London wins, he can’t challenge Patterson for 99 days. Johansson arrives in New York Tuesday. Also this week Phil Moyer faces Yam Bahama in Portland on ABC.

Little League Opens South Ukiah Tryouts at Giorno Park

Ukiah South Little League announces first tryouts for 11 and 12 year olds tonight at Giorno Park. South Perkins Street area youths 9 and 10 years old begin Wednesday at 6 pm at Giorno Park. Final tryouts for 9-12 year olds set for Saturday at 1 pm. players should bring gloves. 8-year-olds tryouts to be announced later.

Giants and Cubs Swap Farm Hands in Regional Deals

The San Francisco Giants trade outfielder Don Taussig to Fort Worth of the American Association while the Chicago Cubs send pitcher Marcelino Solis to Phoenix of the Pacific Coast League. Taussig spent last season with Phoenix and Solis split time between Fort Worth and Chicago.
