Streams Stocked for May Trout Season Across Coastal Counties

California Department of Fish and Game lists 45 waters from San Luis Obispo to Lake County to be stocked for May opening. About 30 streams will stock by May 2. others later in May or after June 1 due to conditions. Dry weather already canceled some plants. Public access is allowed where waters are bordered by private land, with permission advised. Fly fishing only opens May 30 on upper Gualala River. Trout limit is 10. Read includes Mendocino, Lake, Napa, Marin, Sonoma counties with several lakes and reservoirs noted and permit requirements for Sundays in Marin.

Val's 192 Start Not Enough for Ukiah Keg Team

Val McWanely led Ukiah Keg Team with a 192 high game and 452 series but Rosa bowling won two of three in Yokayo Bowl. Delia Rains added 410 and Mickey Tollini 440 in the Adah women’s line. Santa Rosa slipped in the middle game but finished short as Ukiah fell 2-1.

Anton's Propane Claims Timber League Lead With 3-1 Win

Anton's Propane moves into sole first in the Friday Timber League by beating Mendo Wood Products No. 1 3-1. Larry Baldwin posts 207 in middle game and 544 series, Joe Paladini adds 218 final game and 524 series. Mendo's Ernie Eisenhauer tops with 432. Pioneer Furniture edges Ukiah Liquor and Sporting Goods 3-1 led by Joe Center's 558 three-game total and Mike Farnsworth 475. Ukiah Valley Creamery and Yokayo Bowl split 2-2, Yokayo wins first and third games. Zander Moschetti 520 and Jim Foucault 475 lead Creamery. Lou Gram 552 and Shorty Harris 465 top Yokayo. Farmer's Insurance sweeps Bataan Club 4-0 behind Lawrence Rupe 581 and Frayne Brennan 565. Hollow Tree Lumber No. 2 beats Mendo Wood No. 2 4-0 with Sam Brimer 534 and Cliff Robbenwelt 474. Hollow Tree No. 1 defeats Ukiah Pine 3-1 as Durval Carole 454 and Clair Moores 452 pace the win. Ukiah Pine fall short in total pins.

Bowling Trophies Displayed at Bank Ukiah Bank Showcases Yokayo League Awards

Trophies for the Yokayo Bowl early women's league are on display at the Savings Bank of Mendocino in Ukiah. Depositors and visitors see a large array of gleaming statuettes and sponsor trophies in the lobby as top teams and bowlers await league results expected in about three weeks.

Skin Graft on Foot Of Jumper is Success

Boston University high jumper John Thomas, 18, who mangled his left foot in an elevator accident, underwent a skin graft that doctors called a success. He will remain hospitalized for several weeks and may resume training this summer. In Rhode Island, Don Prout outpointed Johnny Freitas in Swansea.

Gowan's 664 Series Leads Ukiah to Victory over Santa Rosa

Big Bob Gowan anchored Ukiah with four 664 series and games of 223 227 and 214 as his team beat Santa Rosa 2820 to 2659. John Finnegan struggled with poison oak posting 151 and 156 while Poppa Adolph Parducci 205 518 Aldo Tollini 231 592 and Pete Fry 198 558 also contributed. Ray of Santa Rosa led with a 244 open but finished 570.

Griffith Wins at St Nick's in Undefeated Pro Record

New York welterweight Emile Griffith wrapped a successful main event defense at St Nick's on Monday night. He moved to 11 wins in as many pro fights with a unanimous decision over Mel Barker of Austin Texas. A next main event is planned at St Nicholas Arena within weeks against an undetermined opponent.

Slow-Pitching Softball League Meeting Announced

A meeting for managers and sponsors planning to enter the new slow pitch league is urged for tomorrow night at 8 at the Municipal Swimming Pool office. Stan Stafford, recreation and parks director, announced the recreational league will supplement the regular competitive softball. Groups or organizations are invited to send representatives to learn about the league and enjoy wholesome exercise.

Fly Fishing Opens on So. Fork of Gualala River

The upper Gualala River will become the second California stream set aside exclusively for fly fishing when it opens for that purpose May 30. Only the Gualala's South Fork and Wheatfield Fork and their tributaries will be reserved for fly fishing, while the main river up to its confluence with the Wheatfield Fork near Valley Crossing will be closed until October 2. Anglers may still take non-drout fish in tidewater, and salmon may be taken in tide water during October. Pleasant Valley Creek in Alpine County is the only other exclusive fly fishing stream in the state, opening May 16.

Trout season openings stagger across counties this year

The trout season schedule begins May 7 in Priest of the State and May 16 in Plumas Sierra Nevada Placer Yuba Dorado Alpine and parts of Butte. Del Norte and Humboldt counties start May 30 with exceptions for lakes and Trinity Meaudo ring Lake and Glenn drained by Mud and nearby rivers. Season ends October 3 with a 13 fish limit in several counties and other counties under the new fish limit.

Hook Again Betters League Discus Mark

Humboldt State freshman Bill Hook from Ukiah high school improved the Coast, Collegiate, AAU and Western Conference discus records with a 15.5 foot longer throw during Humboldt State’s track win over Sacramento State in Arcata. He faltered in the shot put, finishing second as the meet winner posted just over 48 feet.

South League Tryouts For Young Boys Reported

Officials announced a series of tryouts for boys eight to twelve in the South League. Screened candidates aged come from Pecking Street area with sessions at Gachnu Park and St Marys School. Coast League players and younger groups will join the sessions as districts coordinate the slate.
