Bomb at Cuban Embassy in Lisbon Leaves Two Dead

A blast at the Cuban Embassy in Lisbon killed two people and injured four amid Portugal’s tense election campaign. Bison trial recessed in Eureka killing case

The trial of three Eureka men charged with killing and butchering two bison cows and a heifer on Bell Springs ranch in 1974 was recessed due to defendant Eugene Roe illness. Co-defendants James Arnot and Red Thompson face related charges. Nine witnesses have testified since opening Wednesday morning, including witnesses to the killing and butcher scene. Superior Judge Tim O'Brien presides with District Attorney Duncan James prosecuting.

Mendocino County Education Board Sets Potter Valley Split

The Mendocino County Board of Education will hold a special meeting Monday at 10 a.m. in the John W. Taylor conference room to decide on a final proposal to create Potter Valley Unified School District from Ukiah Unified. The board will determine territory size, property disposition, tax rate changes, and other legal requirements before submitting the plan to the State Board of Education for November ballot approval.

Willits arson burglary suspect eludes deputies

Deputies close in on 33 year old Andre Jay Childress suspected of setting fire to the Willits sub station, stealing 3000 dollars worth of equipment, and vandalizing the interior. Search parties within 500 yards report evasive tactics and sightings across ravines while a Sonoma County helicopter joins the hunt. Childress has ties to Covelo Willits and the Bay Area and is described as armed and unpredictable.

County students embark Sunday on Bicentennial tour

A dozen Ukiah Mendocino and other county high school students will depart Sunday for an eight day Bicentennial tour of the Capitol region. They gather Saturday for orientation and a dinner at Manor Inn before their 10 a.m. flight from San Francisco.
