Fingers Delivers Five-Hitter In A's 7-0 Win Over Twins

Oakland rookie Roland Fingers quieted the Minnesota lineup in his major league debut a five hit shutout 7-0 for the A's. He admitted fear of the Twins and Tony Oliva while manager and teammates praised his strong early start. Other AL games saw Boston, California, Detroit win while Cleveland fell and Kansas City edged Seattle.

Mexican welter top AAU fighter wins 147 title in San Diego

Armando Muniz of Mexico defeated Steve Ewell of Oakland in the 147 pound final to claim the 147 title and the outstanding fighter award at the National AAU boxing championships in San Diego. Army boxers won the team trophy with 18 points. Ernie Shaver of Warren stopped Charles Elder in the heavyweight final. The 147 class had 54 knockouts.

Lions Park work party set for Thursday in Ukiah

Ukiah Lions Club members will gather at Lions Little League Park Thursday at 5 p.m. to renovate the diamonds including fencing and dugouts. Dave Strong leads the effort with a large coordinating committee and a 7 p.m. barbecue at Ukiah Municipal Park for Lions members.

Ukiah varsity tennis lost to Hogan’s Spartans 4-3 after a tight match. Singles players Alan Brothers Dan Luther Dan Nicholson and Allen Cooper each fell in straight or three-set battles while Lorin Cantrell won Ukiah’s only singles match in three sets. Doubles teams also split as Ukiah pressed for victory.

Ukiah Rally Falls Short In Six Inning Slugfest

Ukiah built a 4-0 lead with a four-run fourth inning before Hogan’s Spartans struck back in the sixth on a bad hop single and a balk to seize a 7-5 victory at Anton Stadium. Ukiah’s Jayvees later edged Spartans 2-1 behind Lee Rodrigue’s 5 strikeouts and 3 hits. Canadiens Take 3-2 Lead In NHL Semifinal

Montreal defeated Boston 4-2 to seize a 3-2 edge in the best of seven Stanley Cup semifinal. Claude Ruel credited two good teams and criticized officiating after a tight game. Ukiah Dolphins Parents and Officials Meet This Week

Swim club parents and officials are invited to a Thursday 8 p.m. meeting at the Municipal Club House and to a free AAU Officials Clinic Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Swim Center weather permitting. AAU officials from San Francisco will teach timing judging starts strokes and clerking for meets. Clinic is free and those with stop watches are urged to bring them. About 120 children ages six to 17 are already signed up, with workouts Mondays through Fridays 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Ukiah Swim Center under Coach Larry Kauffman.

Albeny salutes Willie the Shoe at Golden Gate Fields

Albany Calif UPI Bill Shoemaker marks his 20th riding anniversary at Golden Gate Fields. He rode his first winner on April 20 1949 at Golden Gate aboard Shafter V. in a career topping 5800 wins and over 41 million in purses. Shoemaker led national standings six times and set a 485 mark in 1953 while earning national money titles ten times.
