Celtics Outlast Knicks In Close Basketball Thriller

Boston built a 51 50 halftime lead then surged to 75 13 after three periods. Don Nelson sparked an 11 2 run to pull ahead as Willis Reed and the Knicks battled to a 91 91 tie with 2 36 left. Rounding out the final minutes, Celtics win on late free throws as Russell scores 21 and Reed 22 in a tense New York showdown.

Burton, Meyer Set AAU Short Course Marks in Long Beach

UCLA star Mike Burton, 22, won two American records at the Long Beach National AAU Short Course Championships. He clocked 15:40.1 in the 1650-yard freestyle and 9:28.7 in the 1000, while 16-year-old Debby Meyer tied her American mark in the women’s 1650 free at 17:04.4. Sue Atwood led women with 34 points. Burton topped men with 52 points.

Ukiah Varsity, Jayvees Rally Past Vallejo in Split Doubleheader

Ukiah's varsity and junior varsity baseball teams split with Vallejo in a Friday doubleheader. Ukiah's bats and pitching produced a first inning rally and a late baserunning push, with Morse driving in two for Ukiah and Gunter and Tate among players contributing. Vallejo's five first-inning runs included a two-run triple after a two-out error. Vallejo won the main game while Ukiah's Jayvees, led by Ron Carlton on the mound, won 10-4 with timely hits across the lineup.

Trackmen win Relays crown at Lakeport event

Ukiah's track team wins the 3rd annual Rotary Club Relays at Lakeport with 84 points. Keith Leland soars in the shot put 50 feet 9 inches and discus 136 feet 6 inches while Art Tillotson clears 20 feet 7 inches in the broad jump. Ted Harriman returns to the open mile in 4:52 as Healdsburg, Sonoma, and St. Helena also post strong showings. Ukiah also claims high and low hurdles shuttle relay and the medley victories.

Mary Rosebrook Named Texas Top High School Player

Mary Rosebrook of George West High School becomes the first Texas girl to win the outstanding high school basketball player award for the 1967-68 season. She led her team to prominence and earned state recognition as a pioneering female athlete.

Chinnock Family Golf Feats Highlight Ukiah News

Mike Chinnock, a former Ukiah High golfer and Army veteran, works as assistant pro at Hoffman Park Golf Course in Carmichael near Sacramento. His father Bob Chinnock, a longtime Ukiah Daily Journal linotype operator, scored a left handed ace on Ukiah Municipal's 5th hole in 1964 and added a second ace on the No 3 par 3, witnessed by Rod Zimmerman and Sam Ray Jr. Mike previously aided at Ramstein Air Base in Germany and is pursuing professional status.

Archer wins the Masters at Augusta in 1969

George Archer captured the Masters title with a final 72 for a 281 total, finishing one stroke ahead of George Knudson and Toni Weltkopf while Billy Casper faltered with five bogeys and three birdies in a dramatic final round. Archer, nicknamed Cowboy, credited his faith and par golf for the victory on a water-involved 15th hole comeback.

Ukiah Net Team Falls 5-2 at Vallejo Apaches

Ukiah tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Vallejo's Apaches. Don Luther won his No. 2 singles in three sets 4-6 6-4 7-5 over David Rykert. Lorin Cantrell won at No. 5 2-6 6-3 6-4 over Ed Fong. Alan Brothers was blanked 0-6 0-6 by Eric Busch at No. 1. Danny Nicholson lost in three at No. 3 6-4 5-7 1-6 to Miguel Rufino. Allen Cooper fell 2-6 2-6 to Herm Robinson. Doubles Jen sen/Deering and Rinehart/Brown also fell. Ukiah 5-2, 1-2 in NBL-I, head to Santa Rosa Tuesday.
