Jaycees Install Flags for Gen MacArthur

Ukiah Jaycees and about 50 merchants installed U S flags around the city to honor Gen Douglas MacArthur who died on April 5 and was laid to rest at Norfolk Virginia on Saturday the final day of mourning proclaimed by President Johnson. Flags are leased for 12 50 the first year and 10 thereafter.

McCabe outlines four point plan for Mendocino economy

George McCabe the 1st District Democratic candidate spoke at Ukiah outlining a four point program to boost the Mendocino and North Coast economy. He urged an all year highway from Willits to Willows to develop the Mendocino Wonderland into a winter tourism center and push for federal funded timber access roads and massive public works projects including a $225 million dam at English Ridge. He touted a national weather warning system for frost, support for Accelerated Public Works and Rural Development, education aid without strings, civil rights legislation and tied in foreign aid, aligning with President Johnson's policies and Fulbright's views.

Sportsmen's Groups Move Toward Consolidating Aims

In Sacramento on Sunday, California Wildlife Federation along with Northern Counties Wildlife Conservation Association and Northeastern California Sportsmen's Council formed the California Sportsmen's Coordinating Council. Ukiah’s Burt Banzhaf was named to represent Mendocino and Lake Counties on a committee to craft recommendations. The council aims to coordinate deer and wildlife management, range improvements, and legislative action for California’s forests, wildlife, and recreation. Attendees discussed range projects water policy Tule-Klamath fowl legislation salmon issues pesticides and herbicides impact on wildlife finances for the Department of Fish and Game and interstate deer management.

Fortuna police believe 14 year old John Halverson may be heading to Mexico after leaving Satellite Motel at 4 10 p m on Saturday He is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall 140 pounds braces green and white sweater tan colored trousers and was carrying no known identification A map of southern California and Mexico was found in his school desk and officials say foul play is unlikely based on initial information from Arcata police

Northwestern California expects fair weather through Tuesday with coastal fog developing on Tuesday. Highs around 83 in Ukiah and 80 in Santa Rosa, with Napa near 75 and overnight lows around 40. Coastal winds mainly northwesterly at 15 to 25 knots.

Major Injuries From Multiple Road Crashes Reported

The California Highway Patrol reports several crashes with major injuries on highways near Willits and Fort Bragg. William Kinney and Bobby Hannigan sustained major injuries in a head on 101 collision near Willits. Lonnie Rikel and Judy Hannigan had minor to major injuries. A Fort Bragg motorcycle pair, Richard Brayton and John Rinne, suffered major injuries after a side swipe on Highway 128. Charlotte Shannon had minor injuries in a separate crash on Highway 20. Zora Houston and Naomi Houston sustained minor injuries in a Old West Hill incident.

Street Parade Entry Forms Now Available

Entry forms for the street Parade to be held May 23 as part of the Ukiah Valley Rodeo are available at the 12th District Fair office on N State. They can also be picked up at John's Taco Station, the Ukiah Chamber of Commerce, or by writing to the Ukiah Junior Chamber of Commerce PO Box 362 Ukiah 95482. Thomas Roberts, president of the sponsoring Ukiah Jaycees, said "The Great American West" is the parade theme. The parade will travel downtown Ukiah at 3 p.m. on May 23 with trophies and ribbon awards.

Fire call log reports multiple incidents on state street

Fire crews responded Saturday at 12 20 p m to a railroad right of way grass fire with no damage. At 12 37 p m a resuscitation call was made for Diane Lath rope at 810 N State Street. At 4 37 p m an ambulance carried trucker Robert Mack from Mo State Street to Hillside Community Hospital.

Gemini Men Selected For Two Seater Gemini Mission

NASA announced Virgil Grissom and John Young as the first two Gemini pilots for a three orbit Earth mission possibly around Christmas. Grissom, a Mercury veteran, will be left seat pilot.
