Sun Devils land Ukiah players McDonald and Cook

Co-Captains Brad McDonald and Leo Cook, top NBL and Redwood Empire stars from Ukiah Wildcats, signed with Arizona State University for the 1973 football season. Each quarterback and linebacker could earn four-year renewable scholarships worth about 16 to 20 thousand dollars if standards are met. Stegemann Motors’ Paul Fitch and Tim Hogan aided the signings, with Ukiah recreation director Dave Strong contributing as well.

Mendocino Community College sets fall 1973 start dates

Trustees approve the first full academic year schedule for Mendocino Community College district with registration September 5-7 and classes starting September 11 1973. The plan includes fall and spring semesters totaling 180 instructional days, summer sessions July 2 to August 10, and multiple in-service days and counseling offerings across campuses and satellites.

Festival Rodeo Queen Contest Open To Young Women

Entries are now being accepted from young women ages 16 21 for the 1973 Festival Rodeo Queen title on June 1 Applications may be picked up at the Greater Ukiah Chamber of Commerce office or the Tack Room by May 1 Contestants will be judged in the horse show arena at the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds June 1 and ride in the Festival parade on June 2 Judging weights are 60 percent ticket sales 20 percent horsemanship and 20 percent appearance and personality

Court halts Nixon OEO dismantling ruling agency must stay

A UPI report says a U.S. District Court ordered the Nixon administration to stop dismantling the Office of Economic Opportunity. Judge William B. Jones ruled that only Congress can abolish OEO, and that the president’s actions were unauthorized, illegal and beyond his authority. The ruling affects Community Action programs and related antipoverty efforts, with further appeals possible.

Ukiah Officer Moses Honored for Saving Accident Victim

Ukiah California Highway Patrol Officer Terry Moses received a certificate of commendation for saving Sandra Wessling and freeing three year old Eric Walker after a November 12 crash. Moses broke the rear window, relayed the child to a bystander, and helped reposition the woman to aid breathing before ambulance arrival.
