Palmer Wins Masters Playoff at Ukiah City Bowling

The Ukiah Men's City Bowling Association crowned champions after a week of competition with 185 bowlers from 35 teams. The Poor Richard's team won first prize of 105 dollars per share plus trophies, followed by Ukiah Valley Creamery, Ukiah Food Products, and Crawford Lumber No 3 in the top four. Doubles and singles winners earned significant prize money, with Larry Hallman of Masonite winning the singles top prize. Will Minkler led all-events with 1940 pins, while Pete Onori and Lew Crandall face a winners’ bowl-off for the high scratch game trophy.

Palmer Seeks Grand Slam After Masters Victory

Masters champion Arnold Palmer aims for a grand slam tonight after winning the Masters in Augusta. He outdueled Gary Player and Don Finsterwald to claim $20,000 and vault into the lead money position, signaling intent to defend the British Open and pursue the U S Open and PGA Championship. Palmer’s playoff turnaround began on the 10th hole as he birdied five of the final nine holes to seize control.

Some Stick Some Back In Minors

Three veteran players Joe Nuxhall Danny McDevitt and Chuck Tanner moved to new major league openings but returned to minors like Von McDaniel Johnny James and Joe Christopher in last minute roster changes. Nuxhall born 1930 broke in 1944 with the Reds and joined Angels from Rochester. McDevitt from Vancouver to Kansas City, Tanner from Dallas-Fort Worth to Angels. Burgess also promoted from Dallas-Fort Worth with McDaniel sent down to Oklahoma City after a stint with Houston Colt .45s.

Injured Boxer Hunsaker Off Critical List in West Virginia

Tunney Hunsaker 32 was removed from the critical list at Bluefield Sanitarium after a brain injury in a 10 round bout with Joe Sheldon. He remained semiconscious with eyes open and responsive to commands but not speaking as doctors noted the condition was serious though not critical. He had been knocked down four times and two brain-relief surgeries were performed.
