President Kennedy plans to toss the ceremonial first ball at the Senators versus Tigers opener in Washington as rain threats loom. Other opening games include Reds vs Phillies in Cincinnati and Houston Colts debuting against the Cubs as baseball expands beyond Texas.
Ukiah Men's Golf Club schedules a Wednesday 7 p.m. meeting at the Ukiah Municipal Clubhouse. President Frank Weatherford and Secretary Ward Briggs urge members to attend and bring a guest as a booster for the club.
The San Francisco Giants, rated by UPI as a solid second in the league, open the season Tuesday vs the Milwaukee Braves at Candlestick Park with Juan Marichal slated to start. Manager Alvin Dark believes his club has the horses for a World Series run despite pitching issues and a crowded schedule.
The St Louis Cardinals won the Grapefruit League title with an 18 8 mark and the Chicago Cubs took the Cactus League crown at 18 9 while the National League pennant remains unresolved. Cards edged Phillies 8 3 in 10 innings in Atlanta to wrap up spring play. Cubs crushed Red Sox 17 7 in Wichita powered by four homers from McKnight Hubbs Altman and White. Reds beat White Sox 8 6 as Sadowski homered twice. Colts beat Angels 8 4 in San Antonio to finish 17 11, while Angels were 16 13. Other results include Twins 84 over A s in Jacksonville and Dodgers 10 7 over Braves in San Diego.
Hopland High School defeated Potter Valley 6-3 as Hopland rallied in the seventh with a walk and errors. Emilio Inay went 2 for 3 for Hopland, while Tommy Wirt and Ricky Knight contributed in Potter Valley’s late bid. Holmes limited the hosts to three hits.
The Municipal sports stadium in Rio de Janeiro covers half a mile in circumference and seats about 155,000. It includes nearly 100 rest rooms four first aid rooms a children's nursery and around 60 concession stands.
The Department of Fish and Game stocked 100000 kokanee salmon in Lake Pillsbury by plane from the San Joaquin hatchery near Fresno. This second experimental planting aims to establish year classes. kokanee are land-locked sockeye and die when they mature. They resemble silvery trout and reach 10 to 16 inches, thriving in cold California waters.
The Ukiah Jayvees rallied for 16 runs against Sonoma, sparking a six run sixth inning led by four RBI from John Peesley and a homer by Bruce Ledford. Hoyt Estes started five innings before Charley Cunningham finished strong in relief. Treppa and Mirata each had two hits, with Peesley and Treppa adding four RBIs apiece.
Gary Player held a two up lead over Arnold Palmer and three ahead of Don Finsterwald after five holes in a three way Masters playoff in Augusta. Player birdied the first and fifth holes to gain the edge while Finsterwald bogeyed the opening hole. The trio ended tied on 280, eight under par, the same score as last year's championship outcome.
Ukiah defeated by Fort Bragg and Sonoma after clutch hitting and pitching woes. Dennis Alfaro dominated in one win for Fort Bragg while Ukiah pitchers struggled with control and fielding errors. Don Forthaber impressed as catcher. King missed games to attend his ill mother. Sonoma held Ukiah to a 9 4 win in a later game.
Ukiah Varsity bowing to Willits 59 54 on Friday then travels to Vallejo and Anderson Valley Relays. Wayne Thornton at Davis just misses finals in highs and lows hurdles. Locatelli runs 2 laps 2 10. Art Peoples wins 100 and low hurdles, Peterson 880. Ukiah B team wins 36 54. Wallace Jay of Willits sets school pole vault record 10 ft 11 3 4 in.
Championship trophy night at Yo kayo Bowl features City Bowling winners from last week. Top honors include Team Richards with 3015, Doubles Pete Welch and Jack Claunch 1299, Singles Larry Hallman 689, All Events Will Minkler 1910, High Scratch Series Bob Gowan 1833, High Scratch Game 247 by Pete Owen and Lew Crandal. Payoffs extend to four or more places based on entries.
The Chicago Black Hawks overcame Montreal in a dramatic comeback to force four straight ties and advance to the Stanley Cup finals for the second consecutive year. Coach Rudy Pilous said they would not need luck to beat Toronto for the trophy.
Los Angeles Lakers rallied from a 24 point deficit to upset Boston 129 122 in Boston. Elgin Baylor led with 36 points and Jerry West added 40 as the Lakers evened the series at one win each. Tom Heinsohn scored 27 for the Celtics and Bob Cousy added 23.
Boston reports Paul Pender, once an $87 a week fireman, now nears a quarter million dollar rainbow after reclaiming the middleweight crown from Terry Downes last Saturday. Promoters rush to arrange a title bout with Gene Fullmer.
