Rowland ordered to cease gravel extraction on Outlet Creek

Mendocino Aggregates co-owner Barney Rowland says the State Lands Division ordered him to stop removing gravel from Outlet Creek where a batch plant sits, calling the Eel River and its tributaries state property. He may seek mineral extraction releases to avoid litigation while a civil suit over zoning and pollution remains unresolved.

Rock throwing youth jailed after Highway 101 incident

Ukiah man Adrian Mason McWhinney, 18, is in county jail after a rock throwing spree along Highway 101 south of Laytonville. He allegedly pelted three passing cars injuring a Laytonville woman and damaging two vehicles. The suspect hid by the roadside and struck vehicles as they passed. Under California law, throwing objects at vehicles to cause injury is a felony.

Murder victim identified at Wethern ranch

The body of Patricia Ann McNight, a 25 year old Texas native, was identified by dental chart study conducted with Oakland police and State DOJ officials. The discovery on October 30 at the Wethern property near Ukiah linked to the Skull Baker MecNight case. other suspects remain sought or charged in related deaths.

Burglar receives machete wound at Palace Hotel

Ukiah man 31 is in satisfactory condition after surgery for an eight inch left arm wound from a machete strike by Palace Hotel owner Vince Cisco during a burglary attempt. Ball fled the scene and was later apprehended outside the hotel. a hold is placed for burglary suspicion.

Four car crash injures two on S State Street

Ukiah officers and a Lucerne couple sustained minor injuries in a four car collision Sunday afternoon on S State Street near Talmage Road. Officer Frank Seward 35 and Marrie Muzio 83 were treated at Hillside hospital and released. The Muzio vehicle driven by Antonio Muzio 84 struck the police car then hit a pickup driven by Arthur Tomlin 19 and a second car driven by Mary Peregrina 37.

Spectacular three car pile up injures seven teens near Ukiah

Seven Ukiah youths were injured in a late Saturday three car collision at Dora Street and Hazel Street as joy riding drivers ran stop signs at high speed. Driver Susan Bykerk 19 is in Hillside Hospital ICU with serious injuries. Harrison 18 and Arias 17 are among passengers treated or held for observation. Police say ten youths involved, none cooperating at first, with investigation ongoing and potential multiple vehicle-code citations expected.

Taxable sales rise in Mendocino County in 1972 fourth quarter

Mendocino County taxable sales reached 34.477 million in Q4 1972, a gain over Q3, as California totals climbed to 15.2 billion with a 2.15 billion year over year rise. Gasoline tax added about 40 percent to the quarter’s growth. Ukiah posted 12,052, Willits 3,372, Fort Bragg 4,823,000, Point Arena 254,000. The year ended with 53.7 billion in annual taxable sales, up 14.6 percent from 1971, aided by price increases and gasoline inclusion. Restaurants and nondurables led gains. total business establishments reached 472,457.
