San Francisco city workers strike worsens, halting about 84 of 100 scheduled school buses and forcing parents to car pool as 1,900 craft union members extend a six day walkout. Schools stay open with limited bus service and talks continue amid a tense transportation crisis.
Pro Syrian guerrillas said to be Syrian troops in disguise seized the Zahrani oil refinery at Sidon and set up positions around Beirut as Lebanon teeters on renewed fighting. Kamal Jumblatt blamed Syrian troops for crippling supply lines and warned of deeper invasion plans amid the civil war.
Mostly fair weather across the region tonight with increasing cloud cover to the north. By Tuesday rain is likely from Cape Mendocino northward and a chance of rain extending south to near Ukiah. Winds shift to southerly 10 to 20 mph on Tuesday. Fort Bragg ranges 43 to 57, Ukiah 40 to 67.
Mendocino County supervisors are asked to back a statewide drive to end Prop 20. John Paulson and Al Barbero of the County Owners Association will seek support at 10 15 a m. Two Upper Lake women, Myrtle Sharon Quintero 31 and Madaline Mary Moore 35, drowned Sunday when their car left Highway 20 and sank in Blue Lakes. The crash happened at about 5 25 p.m. east of the Mendocino County line after the westbound car veered, struck an eastbound vehicle, and entered the lake. Jones Mortuary handling arrangements.
Georgia Pacific Corporation won permission to restart its north Ukiah particleboard plant after a weekend meeting with CAL OSHA. Reopening relieves pressure on Mendocino County mills and plywood plants that used GP waste for production and allowed continued waste disposal under dust suppression and housekeeping measures. The closure idled 48 workers, with up to 50 more affected if still closed.
