Thieu forms new Viet government to resist Reds

President Nguyen Van Thieu announced a new Saigon government to carry on the fight as Communist forces near Saigon. He blamed U S failures and fallen morale on unmet Paris accords and reduced aid, and he denounced foreign press. Nguyen Ba Can to lead the new administration.

Ukiah to seek state funds for dial-a-ride and bridge work

Ukiah plans to request 174500 dollars in AB 325 funds from the county Transportation Planning Agency to finance the Ford Street bridge replacement and Main Street extension, plus four months of dial-a-ride service starting March 1976. The plan explores Tcl taxi company involvement and a possible city purchase or contract operation.

County to study Mendocino water needs with public meetings

The U S Bureau of Reclamation will launch a Mendocino County water study covering irrigation frost protection municipal and industrial use recreation and fish and wildlife. Public meetings are set for April 22 at Brooktrails Lodge Willits and April 23 at Preston Hall Mendocino with final appraisal due December 1976.

Babylift C5A crash in Saigon kills many orphans

A U.S. Air Force C5A Galaxy carrying 305 people including 243 orphans bound for the United States crashed near Tan Son Nhut airport during an emergency landing. At least 178 were killed, with survivors and officials recounting the disaster as authorities consider grounding the remaining C5A fleet.

Ukiah Council Approves Steps for Redevelopment Agency

The Ukiah city council gave the go ahead to prepare legal documents and finance plans for a redevelopment agency at an April 16 meeting. A $35,000 initial outlay is suggested plus a survey, citizens committee, and consultant support with Genge Consultants used on a time and materials basis only.

Accused murderer ruled sane in Ukiah case

Two court psychiatrists concluded Mark Franklin Bernard 57 of Talent Oregon was sane and knew his actions when he allegedly strangled Audrie Avery 53 in a Ukiah motel room on January 30. Bernard appeared in Superior Court but plea entry was postponed. He is held on 100000 bail.
