County grapples with Juan Creek bridge demolition debate

County supervisors debated removing the abandoned Juan Creek bridge near Fort Bragg to stop debris and erosion on Leland Peirce property. Public Works estimated 2850 for permits and 2400 for stream clearance, with a possible cheaper private route or delaying action to 1977.

Fire station purchase abandoned by Ukiah council

Ukiah city council abandoned plans to buy a former service station at Empire Drive and N State Street for a second fire station. An ad hoc committee will study alternate sites and report by April 16, after entails a costly parcel split.

Four Mendocino men indicted on murder and related charges

Mendocino County Grand Jury indicted four defendants after a three hour session. Kevin Anderson 21 and John Fanucchi 23 both of Sonoma face attempted murder, first degree burglary and robbery charges for a Willits shooting that left John Wesley Leeper 23 of Ukiah critically injured. Phillip Burris 18 and Michael Betts 17 of Willits face murder, robbery and assault with intent to do great bodily harm in the death of Albert M. Wagar 20 of Upper Lake found in a station wagon on Ridgewood grade. Bail ranges set. Betts faces capital crime considerations. April 11 plea entry scheduled.

Ukiah Council Approves Federal Housing Funds Application

The Ukiah city council approved applying for 300000 in HUD funds for renovating substandard housing and acquiring property for four plexes to aid low income families. The plan targets 25 senior units 15 disabled units and 15 for low income families with 175 total low income units in Ukiah limits.
