William Port a longtime Tyrone resident dies at age 77 at his son Clarence Port’s Osceola home after a two month illness of dropsy. Funeral held at 3:30 pm at his daughter Mrs. S. M. Parsons’ home with Rev. M. C. Piper officiating. Interment in Tyrone cemetery. Born Huntingdon Oct 14 1814, he moved to Tyrone about 1858 and worked at trade and later with Pennsylvania Railroad. Survived by six sons and one daughter: L. W. Port Greensburg, W. D. Port Ebensburg, Mrs. S. M. Parsons, George W. Port Tyrone, Clarence C. Port Osceola, Charles I. Port East Tyrone, Clyde A. Port Altoona. wife died Jan 6, 1886.
Captured Sunday by several men at McConnellstown near Ilantingdon on the Broad Top railroad. Dutchy left gloves in a Saxton store, was recognized on return trip, and seized with two of three gold watches, three rings, and about $43. He sold one watch and spent around forty to fifty dollars. Taken to Huntingdon jail to await the next county court term.
Two gangs are connecting Tyrone with the main long distance telephone system this week. Within thirty days Tyrone will be on the line extending from New York to Cleveland, Bellefonte, Williamsport and Carleton. Tyrone residents will then talk with New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Cleveland within weeks. The line will also be extended to Chicago before the World's Fair opening.
A Niagara street car passenger, an aged Irishman with a pipe, refuses to stop smoking after the conductor warns him. The conductor returns, irritated, and reminds him again, while the man insists he is not smoking and that he is not moving his feet to walk.
The President designates Thursday November 26 as a day of joyful thanksgiving to God for providence and civil religious liberties. Observances include rest from toil worship and renewing family ties. Also notes the seal and date in Washington with Blaine as secretary of state. The Altoona District Epworth League meets to organize and plans a December 17 convention at First M E Church Altoona with multi-session program and broad youth participation.
The semi annual Blair county Christian Endeavor convention met in Altoona with many workers present. Rev Owen James chaired the afternoon and evening sessions, discussions covered prayer meetings and the Lookout Committee. Resolutions urged observing the Sabbath and closing the Columbian Exposition on Sunday, with Roaring Spring chosen for the next meeting site.
In special session Burgess Beaston presided as council granted American Telegraph and Telephone Co. a right of way for long distance lines through borough streets with a clause barring line shifts without council consent. Other actions include fence and crosswalk notices, pavement grade enforcement, and approval of a street lighting contract with Home Electric Light Co. The Corrada & Saylor Manufacturing Company of Pottstown Pa secures the award for iron and steel work on Machinery Lal at the Chicago Exposition. The project features the main building with three steel arches over 100 feet high and a central transept 130 feet wide topped by three domes 240 feet high. Sheriff John Orr and Jury Commissioners John G Watters and Louis Lamade compiled juror panels for the January 1892 courts. Grand and traverse jurors named across Antis Snyder and Tyrone townships, with several individuals listed for each week and role. John Oliver Stroup son of John C and Annie M Stroup died at his Grace street home on Wednesday evening aged one year four months five days from spasmodic croup. Funeral services were held Friday at two o'clock at the home conducted by Rev C L Fitzwilliam. William Frederick Krick, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Krick, died at their West Juniata street residence at 11 o'clock Wednesday night pneumonia was the cause. Remains were taken Thursday to Reading for interment.
The Beech Grove mine at the east end of the tunnel reopened after a lease by Tyrone’s J. L. Mitchell and Altoona’s John Lloyd. Entry draining will take time before heavy shipments begin, but once prepared a large coal and coke output is expected. Coke ovens are at the site and to be activated soon. the mine should employ several hundred workers and boost local town prospects.

He claimed to have evidence and insisted he had seen an idea transferred between people, though lacking established understanding.
