A freight train derailed into an open switch on the Cumberland branch Wednesday morning, causing the death of Gus Eliot, a well known local figure. The accident disrupted service and prompted investigations by railway authorities.
L L Haskins surveys Stillwater creeks from 1835 to present noting recurring floods at Waterford Uhrichsville and Tuscarawas valley. Early flood dates include Jan 10 1836 Feb 15 1837 Mar 1838 Feb 9 1839 with damaging impacts on fences hay crops and river bottoms.
Jerry Shiltz a Canton well digger shot his wife then killed himself as police arrived. Mrs Shiltz survived initial reports though there was little hope for recovery. The couple had long held family tensions and Shiltz had shown erratic behavior and heavy drinking before the tragedy.

Taylor, Anna Gram, C. Wineh, Mrs. Lower, Hines family, J. W Price, S. Walters, F. S. Spring, L. Wineh, Joseph Kinsey, and the Guest House. Framing social visits, painting firm names, and a hospitalizing infant. Also mentions KK. of P. Grand Lodge in Sandusky and teachers ill in Newcomerstown.
A Columbus based Panhank brakeman drew 56 on pay day and lost 85 in a gambling den linked to Hotel Bovey. His wife filed suit to recover the funds but the money was repaid to her before formal proceedings began.
Miss Grace Grassey is recovering from a severe illness. A R Kennedy was in the twin cities on business Tuesday. Charles Gibbons spent Sunday with relatives here. Miss Grace Barnes of Uhrichsville spent the latter part of the week with Mrs J M Tuston who has been quite sick and is slowly improving. J L Grassey of Bellevue came home Saturday due to his sister Grace's illness. L P Barnes visited friends in the twin cities Monday.
Jim Cahaney was arrested Monday on a paternity charge by Miss Schweitzer and taken before J. L. Hill yer for a hearing. He was bound over to court in 300 dollars, and while attempting bail he jumped from a second story window to the pavement and escaped. If he repeats the act he will draw interest at fall fairs.
