Drowned While Bathing Near Newport
Otto Galbraith son of Joseph Galbraith of near Newport drowned while bathing in Big Stillwater above the Dennison Water Supply Co pump house. He could not swim and went beyond his depth despite cautions from companion Jordan Armstrong who nearly drowned saving him. The body lay underwater about thirty minutes. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon and he was interred in Union Cemetery.

Wm Stokes, a colored man, spent the night with Lee Barrett in the city. In the morning he wore a new suit and patent leather shoes not his. He departed the scene. Man and Team Plunge 200 Feet After Wagon Collapses
Charles Ohler of Big Bend narrowly survived a 200 foot fall at a Davis farm pass when his wagon turned and slid down a steep cliff. His team and wagon tumbled below. Ohler survived but was bruised and sprained. One horse is believed fatally injured.

Restaurant proprietor seeks aid in arrest of suspect
On last Sunday morning under a warrant requested by Cliff Clemens proprietor of the All Right Restaurant Chief Goodwin arrested Clyde Bowers for obtaining money on false pretenses. Late Saturday night Bowers by misrepresentation obtained 83 from Clemens clerk. Before police justice Hillyer, on advice of Attorney Krupr, Bowers pleaded guilty and, in default of bail and costs, was jailed in the county bastile.

Obituary: Mary Hammond of Uhrichsville Born 1822 in Md
Mary Hammond nee Fowler born near Fredericksburg Maryland March 2 1822. She moved to Ohio with her mother as a girl later lived in Newport near her brother Benjamin and settled in Uhrichsville eight years prior to death. She married William Hammond in 1843. He died at Atlanta in 1864 as a member of Company BE first Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Of nine children three preceded her. She became a Christian and was a member of Uhrichsville M E Church. She died August 15 1900 after long illness. Funeral at home August 17 conducted by Revs F M and E B Westhafer. The News force was on sick list this week.
