The Issue on Land and Allied War Strength in Europe
The resistance of the French and British in Belgium drew off German striking power, aiding Wegand’s line from the Meuse to the Somme. German air strength is focused in France and Belgium, delaying attacks on Britain. RAF superiority and air presence help explain the slower German air campaign against the UK. The enemy penetration toward the Low Countries demands aerodrome and supply build up, while demolitions at porte limit German impact. Britain faces an expected but formidable invasion attempt, with morale boosted by national effort and factory overtime. Despite shifting opinions in the Balkans and United States, UK publicity centers on confidence in victory, unity with France, and a strong navy and air force, while Britain’s army trains to win with sufficient tanks and guns.

Salmon and cod fisheries show mixed results this season
The salmon fishery is not as good as last year though a few netters do fairly well. Easterly winds hamper catches while the codfishery improves little from early hopes. Several schooners are fitting for the Labrador with two already sailing for Belle Isle. Hook and Line men fare fairly, and Hodge Brothers are freezing salmon with shipments to Lewisporte by motor boats and steamer.
