Notice to advertisers. Copy due by June 18 for the Diamond Jubilee SUN issue to appear by June 29. Rates set at 25 cents per inch with space from 1 inch to 20 inches across columns, Confederation Life.
The 3rd Sunday after Trinity features services at St Peter's with Matins at 1 am and Evensong at 7 pm plus a 2 30 pm Sunday School. St Andrew's hosts Evensong at 3 pm. United Church on South Side offers Layday at 1 am, Sunday School and Bible Class at 2 30 pm, and Layman at 7 pm. Little Harbours lists Layinah at 3 pm.
A late 19th century notice lists present pay scales for fitters engine and motor mechanics wireless engineers watchmakers electrical instrument makers electricians locksmiths and watch and clock repairers with stated wages and wage scales.
A proclamation from Vice Admiral Sir Humphrey Walwyn calls Newfoundland volunteers aged 18 to 35 with trades such as fitters wireless engineers clockmakers and electricians to join the Royal Air Force Ground Staff via the Air Ministry. Recruits will enlist in Newfoundland for the Royal Artillery then proceed to England for trade testing with potential transfer to the RAF. Married men must provide certificates. free board clothing and medical care are provided. Applicants must pass arithmetic and general knowledge exams upon arrival at St John’s.
The office invites outside applicants to apply in person or in writing to the magistrate in their jurisdiction. Qualified candidates will face medical examination upon arrival at St John’s or another recruiting centre. If found unsatisfactory, applicants are sent home. Interviews run daily from 10 am to noon, except Sundays and holidays. God Save the King. May 17 1940.
