FBI Pushes Spy Charge Against Coplon and Russian Engineer

Federal prosecutors urged grand jury indictments for Judith Coplon, 27, of Barnard College, and Valentine Gubitchev, 32, a United Nations engineer, on charges of stealing government secrets. The pair were arrested after a bus stop with a planted documents cache. Coplon remains free on $20,000 bail, while Gubitchev is held on $100,000 bail awaiting legal counsel.

Odom Far Ahead On Honolulu To Teterboro Flight

San Francisco news reports Bill Odom flying the Waikiki Beech toward California at about 150 mph with a 25 mph tailwind. He contacted a coast guard flying boat 450 miles off the California coast and aimed to reach the San Francisco area around 2 45 p m Tucson time. The escort from Alameda air station and radio communications with KGO aided the non stop attempt from Honolulu to New Jersey. Odom previously set a record at Oak land after a storm forced a 2401 mile earlier flight.

Tanker search continues for missing B-29 in Philippines

A week after a B-29 tanker vanished with nine aboard, rescuers search the Philippine islands for the aircraft. Eight crew were from Davis-Monthan AFB and the ninth was an assistant chief of staff. ColDalene Bailey with three tankers was due at Davis-Monthan from Arabia as others had already arrived. The Lucky Lady II had completed the nonstop world flight earlier.

Blast Damages Nogales School

Nogales high school suffered a blast from gas and oil vapor in a basement furnace. Heating engineer Alfredo Valencia was thrown but uninjured as the three story building cracked walls and shattered windows.
