U S Girl and Soviet Official Held on Spying Charges

Judith Coplon, 27, a Justice Department employee, and Valentine A Gubitchev, 32, a Soviet UN official, were arrested in New York on charges of stealing confidential U S government information. Coplon allegedly carried a package of summaries. both were detained for questioning after a late evening stakeout.

Round-World Crewmen Take It All In Stride

13 crew members of the Lucky Lady II returned home to Tucson after a nonstop 23,000 mile world flight in 94 hours and one minute. Captain James G. Gallagher and Lt. Arthur M. Neal called the trip routine and said weather delay was the only hitch. Neal noted the latest flight was easier than their first world tour with more stops and rest.

Arizona Senate Approves 6.05 Million UA Building Plan

The Arizona senate appropriations committee endorsed a 6 053 000 building program for the University of Arizona and Flagstaff and Tempe colleges for 1949 50 and 1950 51. The university gets 2 713 000 for the two years, well short of regents 10 569 155 request, with 1 136 000 for a liberal arts building 620 000 for a stadium dormitory 87 000 for an admin addition and 150 000 for a student union in the first year. A second year 249 000 is planned for an unspecified project.

Chicago March 5 A traffic officer Francis P. Sherrier 25 off duty saved Mrs Lillian Paul 39 who dangled from a hotel window by her coat tails at Wacker and Clark Street. With two officers holding his legs he swung across to grip her wrists and pulled her inside as a shutter freed her coat.
