Secretary of Defense Wilson testified before a Senate subcommittee that President Eisenhower never dictated specific ceilings or cuts in military spending. He cited that no such instruction was given in 30 years, while hearings explored whether defense budget sizes were driven by security needs or admin fiscal policy and noted a 1954 budget review and a move to place funds in reserve.

Annexation delayed for Southside area by a month

Mayor Don Hummel said the annexation of the 0.8 square mile southside excluded area will be delayed at least a month while Pima County acquires rights of way for widening Silverlake road. He noted that more than 60 percent of property owners have consented and the county process is cheaper than the city's. South Tucson would be cut off from future expansion. Merrill said consents are insufficient. The area runs south from the city line along 25th street between Nogales tracks and South Campbell Avenue and will join the area annexed April 26.
