New York GOP taps hotel man Christenberry for mayor
New York City Republican leaders designated Robert Christenberry a hotel executive and former NYS Athletic Commission chairman to run against Mayor Robert Wagner. Christenberry, 58, veteran of World War I who lost his right hand, criticized Wagner as a “do nothing” mayor and called for crime, transit, taxes and hospital reforms. Wagner praised Christenberry as a friend. The last Republican mayor of New York was Fiorello LaGuardia, elected in 1933.
