Two Medals Awarded To Tucsonian

Donald R. Collins 21 of 4105 E Flower St received the Army Commendation Medal with valor device and the Air Medal for meritorious service in Vietnam with the 200th Assault Helicopter Company. He volunteered for a night mission to recover a downed helicopter, and the Air Medal covered April 14 to May 1. Collins is the son of Mr and Mrs Julian Collins of Sierra Vista and graduated Catalina High School in 1963. He worked for the Forest Service before enlisting in March 1966.

New York trading mixed as blue chips lagged while gains in May machine tools backed by a brighter economic picture. IBM declined 7 to 8 points while Eastman Kodak, Du Pont, Union Carbide slipped. Pan American and Eastern Air Lines fell late.

Probation Granted for Ex-Tucson Bank Teller

A former Tucson bank teller and mother of two was placed on one year probation for misapplying 5591 in bank funds. Margaret A. Warren 2638 N Columbus Blvd pleaded guilty to taking the money from Pima Savings & Loan last September. $200 has been repaid and arrangements are in place to repay the rest. Guilty pleas were entered by Harold L. Bulger and Gerald A. Stephens. Bulger 30 of Fort Worth pleaded guilty to attempting to pass a counterfeit $20 in Tucson on April 24. Stephens 22 of Sierra Vista pleaded guilty to 11 counts of embezzling 270 in government funds while manager of a Fort Huachuca post exchange. Bulger and Stephens will be sentenced July 17.

Car Truck Collision Sends Two To Hospitals on Ruthrauff

Stephen Boyer 21 of 2961 W Ruthrauff and Vaughan Short 44 of 1950 W Ruthrauff were injured in a late night crash at W Ruthrauff Road and N La Cholla Blvd. Boyer suffered multiple cuts and is in satisfactory condition at St Mary's Hospital. Short had minor injuries and was released. Deputy Ramsden said Boyer lost control, hit a utility pole, then sideswiped Short's eastbound pickup, and the car dragged 166 feet, tearing fencing before stopping at a power pole. Boyer will be cited for failure to control.

Derailed Freight Train Spills Gravel at Grant County Site

About 32 cars of a 9 car Great Northern freight train derailed near Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, scattering gravel grain and sawdust. No crew injuries reported. The project includes a service station and trailer park on 80 acres, planned over 10 to 15 years with a $2 million investment, seeking a liquor license and rezoning before the planning commission.

Burglary Report At Mrs Liggett’s Home

Police report a weekend burglary at the home of Mrs Anna M Liggett 1407 E Blackridge Drive. A 158 piece Peruvian china set and 24 silver mounted water and cocktail glasses valued at 500 dollars were stolen after intruders forced a door to enter the residence.
