Navy to decommission eight blimps and pause airship program
The Navy announced it will deflate and store eight of its ten active airships by Nov. 30, with two kept for research a year longer. The plan, driven by budget cuts and improved helicopter and fixed wing capability, ends the blimp era at Lakehurst, affecting about 100 officers, 625 sailors, and 489 civilian workers. The two research blimps will be deflated by June 30, 1962, leaving 15 lighter-than-air craft in reserve for emergencies.
