High Russian officials met Western Allies in Berlin for the first time in three months to seek a coordinated money reform for the four power city and outline trade relations. UK proposed talks. delays plagued the session.
West Germany's new trade in American currency began its battle Tuesday with the cigarette regime as the deutsche mark replaces the reichsmark in the U S British and French zones. If it wins Americans Britons and French would bear fewer taxes while Europe gains more coal steel and German production and Germans gain stability and better jobs. If it fails the land risks barter economy and temporary unemployment as the struggle lasts months.
National League games postponed by rain include Pittsburgh at Brooklyn and Chicago at New York. Chicago postponed and Boston at St Louis, Philadelphia at Cincinnati, and St Louis at Philadelphia all slated for night. Cleveland beat New York 5 to 2.
Arizona Supreme Court rules Dan E. Garvey, secretary of state, functions as acting governor after Gov. Osborn's death but is not entitled to the governor's $10,000 salary. He retains office space and facilities, and must discharge duties for the unexpired term. The ruling preserves the interim governance under the secretary of state.
Israeli and Irgun troops clashed on Tel Aviv central beach amid a threatened civil war context. An LST attempted to land banned arms at Natanya and was grounded near UN headquarters as UN observers were dispatched.
Greek army units from the 2nd 8th and 10th divisions push into the Grammos mountains trapping 7 000 guerrillas led by Markos Vafiades. The 15th division cuts a key escape corridor between the Aliakmon and Saranda poros rivers. Three guerrilla battalions surrender near Milia as mass graves are reported and fighting widens toward Nestorion Kastanahorian.

The 1948 Republican platform pledges internationalism a strong military machine and civil rights for all, aims to win November votes, and was described as broad enough for GOP hopefuls to stand on. It calls for inflation attack, waste reduction, production stimulation, a sound currency, debt reduction, and robust national defense while promising tax relief to be administered locally.
William W. Harvey a 36 year old radio announcer and his wife Billie relinquish seven children aged 9 months to eight years after signing adoption papers in Lake Worth Florida. Mrs Harvey says she has a terminal heart condition and could not risk the children in a home. The Harveys moved from Binghamton New York to Lake Worth last March and arranged the adoption two weeks prior after placing an ad in a Miami paper.
Rep. Richard F. Harless returned from Washington to launch his campaign for the Democratic nomination for governor. He said Arizona makes progress in the Colorado River water dispute but faces delays from Southern California interests despite support from neighboring states.
Governor Dewey shows cohesive strength at the convention and should win by the fourth ballot if successful. Vandenberg remains the only viable alternative, with Michigan backing second-choice strength and the atmosphere favoring Dewey’s active organization over a fractured opposition.
At Philadelphia convention center on June 22 the Arizona delegation voted 7 to 1 to yield to New York and place Gov. Thomas E. Dewey first for nomination. Alabama will pass without naming anyone. At the Philadelphia Republican convention, Clare Boothe Luce and Gov. Dwight Green assailed Roosevelt and Truman policies. They faulted domestic and foreign policy, predicting a GOP victory. Green labeled the cold war a byproduct of the New Deal, while Luce cited alleged Soviet concessions in Tehran Yalta and Potsdam.
Harold E. Stassen appears to be fading within the Republican presidential race as Dewey maintains strength and Taft rises as the next strong contender. Vandenberg shows little early momentum, while Stassen supporters hint at possible vice presidential deals, though others deny talks.
The United Auto Workers CIO on Tuesday mapped a counterproposal to Ford Motor Co's offer of an 11 to 14 cent hourly wage boost. The union deemed Ford's plan inadequate and said none of its points were acceptable, while preserving the right to seek rank and file backing. A counterproposal will be submitted later this week, details to be announced.
Pennsylvania Senator Edward Martin withdraws from backing his delegation for Dewey and moves to nominate his name for the GOP. Martin says he does not know how many of Pennsylvania's 73 votes he can carry, while the convention debates foreign policy and housing within a brief 2400 word platform.
A pro Taft Georgia delegation plans to appeal the credentials committee decision to seat a pro Dewey group at the GOP convention. The contest centers on 16 Georgia ballots as Ray Foster Jr. heads the pro Taft effort and vows a floor fight Wednesday.
