The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a union newspaper may take sides in a federal election without violating Taft-Hartley. It overturned an indictment against the CIO for supporting a congressional candidate in Maryland via CIO News. The court did not rule on the ban’s constitutionality.

Phoenix June 21 the state highway commission started work on its next fiscal year budget a tentative 26909000 budget approved earlier now faces cuts from a 10 percent federal aid reduction the commission was pressed by the Phoenix central labor council to raise wages for highway workers with skilled staff earning 20 to 30 cents an hour as discussed during the session.
Summer officially began in Tucson at 5 11 a m on Monday amid the 1948 solstice. Daylight totals reach 14 hours 17 minutes, per Dr Edwin F Carpenter UA astronomy head. Thermometer at Davis Monthan Airbase sees below 100 for the second day, forecast 96 versus Sundays 97.
The Greek ninth division advanced four miles into guerrilla territory near Konitsa in the opening move of a major offensive amid the Greek civil war. About seven thousand rebels are believed aimed at Grammos, with six divisions, thousands of troops, and American advisers involved in the operation.
Major Claude E. Taylor of Miami Arizona is named among American military advisers with Greek forces. He is said to be with the ninth division leading a major offensive against Communist forces.
WENDEN June 21. A coroner's jury ruled the head on crash that killed four people last Thursday an accident. No blame assigned. Victims include Mrs. Vivian Lane 39 Phoenix Casmir Makomaski 22 and Sandra Sullivan 7 with her sister Ardis 19 both of Los Angeles.
Washington June 21 U P says the compromise draft bill covers men aged 18 through 25. Registration for all 18 to 25, drafted 19 to 25 as needed to reach armed forces strength. Service limited to 21 months. Inductions delayed 90 days unless a national emergency is declared. Act expires two years after signing. Army expects at least 225000 in year one, then depends on volunteers. Volunteers 18 year olds can sign for 12 months then join reserves. Doctors and dentists under 25 must register. Veterans with 18 months service since Sept 16 1940 or 90 days in the WWII period exempt. Draft boards like WWII but fewer. Date of registration to be set by the President. Exemptions include ministers, guardsmen, reserve members, conscientious objectors, many public officials and scientists, and agricultural and industrial workers per Presidential regulations. Family men noted by President via the selective service.
Berlin supply trains for about 10,000 Americans stalled Monday due to a U S Soviet deadlock over currency reform. Marshal Sokolovsky declared the reform completes the division of Germany and barred western money from the Soviet zone. The U S refused inspections, leaving airlift as the only reliable supply channel as Deutsche mark rollout looms.
Ford Motor Co. proposed an 11 to 14 cent hourly raise for about 110000 CIO United Auto Workers. The plan would boost those earning 1.50 or more to 1.64 and those below to 1.61. The union sought 30 cents. GM recently raised wages 11 cents for 225000 workers. Chrysler gave 13 cents to 90000.
Denver engineers and water experts began work on final details of a compact to distribute upper Colorado river water. The stepwise meetings include the upper basin compact committee and the Colorado water conservation board with sessions planned in Vernal Utah and state legislatures to follow.

The American League slate shows Washington at Detroit postponed by rain while New York at Cleveland and Philadelphia at St Louis play at night, with only scheduled games. In the National League, Pittsburgh at Brooklyn, St Louis at Boston, and Cincinnati at Philadelphia are on the night schedule, weather permitting.
Henry L. Mencken suggests a surprise compromise to lead the Republican party with Herbert Hoover for president and Alf Landon for vice president. He jokes about the metaphor of a buggy and horse and notes his first convention in 1904 and his plan to attend, saying this may be his last. He praises Dewey's speech and remarks on party conventions as uniform and predictable.
Arizona Republicans meet at the Penn Sheraton to nominate a chairman for the uninstructed delegation and to select a credentials committee. Charles Kelland announces votes, Orme Lewis is named chairman, and Maddox wins the credentials post amid ties. Dewey support noted among Bilby and Maddox allies.
Forest service officials and Coconino deputies search Mill Park forest fire area for William Hendrix 18 of Phoenix. Hendrix, a recent Phoenix high school graduate, left the dispatch office Saturday at noon and was last seen around 5 pm on the fire line. His companion James F. Spence 18 reported his absence Monday.
In Phoenix negotiations for new contracts resumed Monday with 5,000 workers seeking a 20 cent per hour wage raise after extended talks and a one week recess.
Acting Governor Dan E Garvey names Eugene W Gene Doyle of Phoenix to fill a vacancy. The official notice appears in BULLETINS on page 19.
Philadelphia dispatch reports a lively start to the Republican convention with 1094 delegates present. Harold Stassen forecast a strong third on the first ballot and ninth on the final tally as Dewey Taft and Vandenberg vie for the nomination. Taft predicted four to five ballots with about 300 votes on the initial ballot.
The convention program lists speakers for Monday and Tuesday. Monday features an invocation by Cardinal Dougherty and a keynote by Gov. Dwight H. Green with Clare Boothe Luce. Tuesday includes remarks by Sen. Wherry and Rep. Frances Bolton and Sen. Baldwin, plus addresses by Hobson Reynolds and former President Hoover.
