Geologist Plans Descent Into Active Volcano Lab Study

University of Arizona geologist Dr. Bert E. Nordlie seeks to descend into Kilauea’s crater with an assistant, to sample gases and assess their role in ore formation. The project, funded by the Sloan Foundation and UA grants totaling over 26 thousand dollars, aims to create a permanent campus lab for magnetic gas studies. If allowed, Nordlie may reach a 150 foot depth to study gases in their natural state, potentially advancing understanding of ocean and life formation.
