Church Favors Merger Delay
Oberlin Ohio June 19 A merger commission of the Congregational Christian church urged delaying union with the Evangelical and Reformed church for at least a year with possible action next year or at the 1950 biennial. The council debated three paths including delaying definite action, endorsing union, or adjourning to June 1949 or 1950. The plan would form the United Church of Christ with about 2 million members and follows 1942 discussions with broad synod approval. The meeting also marked plans for the Congregational churches 300th anniversary observance at Cambridge Massachusetts with multiple services and lectures.
