District 1 Hot Lunch Program Posts Losses and Cuts

The District 1 hot lunch program finished the year $9,876 in the red, despite a $16,239 net profit in 1962-63. The board moved to cut lunches at all five high schools to limit further losses, noting higher high school losses but improved participation at elementary and junior high levels. Estimated 1964-68 could have required up to $50,000 from the general fund. The program aims to be self sustaining through 30 cent lunches, with $25,381 budgeted for wages in 1963-64 of a $1.5 million operation, and about one fifth of food from federal surplus commodities. The balance, $819,000, comes from private suppliers.
