Sears Center Zoning Forwarded to City Council

The City Planning and Zoning Commission approved heavy business B-24 and light business B-1 zoning for the 70-acre Sears Broadway site bounded by Broadway 44th Street and extensions of Chantilly Lane and Alamo Avenue. They rejected extending 14th Street and looped dead-end streets, noting the developers will deed 100 foot strips. A public hearing raised neighborhood opposition to 14th Street extension. The Sears center will include a Sears Roebuck store and additional shops with construction hoped to start soon after council approval. The commission also set Aug 31 for Tucson Newspapers rezoning along South 3rd Avenue to support a new business and editorial building, with additional parcels planned for high-rise zoning and other SP parcels nearby.

New Berlin Wall Gap Appears Aimed at Western Profits

Western officials note the first new crossing since 1961 opens Rudower Chaussee from West to East Berlin near Schoenfeld Airport. The move appears a Communist commercial venture to lure Western tourists, with armed guards and roadblocks present. Berlin officials say use is up to individual tact and conscience, while flights to Vienna begin weekly from East Berlin, offering West Berlin travelers a shorter route.
