Cirrhosis Surgery Risks and Outcomes Discussed
Dr Alvarez surveys shunting operation for cirrhosis with enlarged gullet veins. In a study of 33 patients, 15 operated and 18 controls, bleeding risk dropped after surgery but overall mortality rose slightly. Two thirds of operated patients showed vein improvement, while many not operated fared better long term. Ammonia poisoning and non cure of cirrhosis remain concerns. no drug or diet restores liver function.
