Gurney presses for adequate draft amid Senate House deadlock

Washington June 15 Sen Chan Gurney Republican South Dakota says Congress risks national security if it does not approve drafting of teenagers. Senate House conferees remain deadlocked on extending the draft with age 18 and 19. A compromise would allow drafting 18 year olds last and limited to the continental United States. Conferees agree to top draft age at 45, Army plans no calls over 29 for now. The Army estimates a 52 000 man pool aged 19 to 29 plus volunteers, making overseas calls for 18 year olds unlikely.
