Lavetter Rules Out New Jury Probe In McDonald Death
Justice of the Peace Toby Lavetter said a new coroner's jury inquest into Eugene F. McDonald’s death is unlikely. McDonald, 23, heir to Zenith radio millions, was found Feb 3 with a gunshot wound and wrist slashes. Green’s office and sheriff still investigate, but Lavetter sees no new evidence prompting another inquest. A sheriff’s report supports the suicide theory, while an expert witness suggested someone else may have fired the gun.

Jury Trials In City Court Decreed Appeal Planned
The Arizona Court of Appeals ruled City Court must offer jury trials in misdemeanor cases involving state statutes unless waived. City Attorney Calvin Webster said the decision could cost Tucson $50,000 to $100,000 more annually and require at least two more magistrates. The ruling followed a writ for Charles Rothweiler who sought a jury trial in a drunken driving appeal from City Court. The court also held Superior Court cases, including appeals, must allow jury trials when statutes authorize them.
