Corbett proposes second half of 10% raise to avert firemen strike

Mayor James N. Corbett urged the City Council to adopt the remaining 5 percent of a 10 percent citywide pay raise as a temporary measure to prevent a potential firemen strike. He planned a morning meeting with Local 479 leader Brethous and Fraternal Order of Police head Polito, who did not attend. Brethous said union members remain upset and may pursue tactics after requests for higher pay. The issue relies on the Civil Service Commission which must recommend any larger raise, with officials noting fringe benefits offset lower salaries in Tucson. Corbett urged continued wage surveys and more staff for timely updates.
