Exemption Planned If Family Member Killed In Service
The Senate approved a draft bill amendment granting draft exemptions to sons in families that have lost an immediate member in the armed forces. The rider, supported by Sen. Robert Packwood, would exempt those serving or eligible draftees if a parent, sibling, or other relative was killed in action, died in duty, or later from injuries or disease. The measure also extends to prisoners of war or those missing in action.

Ocean floor creeps north under Pacific from molten mantle
Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists report slow northward movement of the Pacific seabed verified by the Glomar Challenger deep sea project. Over 100 million years a point would shift about 1800 miles, at under an inch per year, supporting continental drift theory.

Alcoholics Kin Often Will Not Admit Problem
The Rev. Kenneth Whitney told about 30 at the University of Arizona that families of alcoholics often deny problems while worrying about when the drinker will return home drunk. He noted spouses ignore their own issues while trying to help the alcoholic and cited a recovery story ending in divorce. About 250 people attend the Southwest School of Alcohol Problems through Friday.
