In Tucson the first special election since February 1944 shows only 1,538 of 16,948 eligible voters casting ballots by 1 p.m. Polls close at 6. The heated race centers on an $850,000 bond for a $5,000,000 truck route and nine city charter changes.
The Senate voted 43 to 33 to permit the army to enlist 25 000 aliens as part of the two year draft bill. Senator Lodge of Massachusetts sponsored the amendment and said enlistees could seek citizenship after five years. Critics led by Senator Gurney warned it shifts policy and could draw foreign resentment.
Paris reports the French cabinet approved the six power accord on western Germany and sent it to the assembly for Friday debate. Foreign Minister Georges Bidault led the push for formal acceptance of the London agreement by the nations including the United States Britain and others. The cabinet debated five hours and will reconvene to tackle the currency issue amid expected opposition from communists and far right groups.

The Veterans Administration plans a 12 million dollar cancer and arthritis research center in Chicago with work starting before January. VA medical director Dr. P B Magnuson calls the project the greatest opportunity the world has ever seen and cites anticipated 1950 cancer patient totals. The center will coordinate with the Atomic Energy Commission and the University of Chicago and Illinois.
Ontario Premier George Drew loses his legislative seat but the Progressive Conservatives retain control with 53 of 90 seats. Results show the PC party capturing about 42 percent of the vote. The CCF wins 22 seats, Liberals 12, with one Liberal Laborite and two Labor Progressive seats.
Soft coal operators pressed for 24 more hours to discuss a possible contract with John L. Lewis as negotiations paused until Wednesday. Lewis sought wage improvements and welfare fund guarantees, while the operators opposed funding $14 million in new death and disability benefits. Van Horn objects to the pension plan, citing Taft Hartley concerns, as talks stall over the dwindling welfare fund.

Harsh contest for Hatch judgeship and multiple renomination bids feature local figures Mabry Fernandez Miles Lusk Seefeldt Kennedy and others.
A search party led by Apache County Deputy Sheriff Hugh Cathey hunted for Roy Crozier missing since Sunday on a fishing trip in the White Mountains east of the Jofite River. Crozier, 45, foreman at Southwest Lumber mills McNary, did not return to a camp on Diamond Creek with his wife and her parents.

Acting Gov. Dan E. Garvey plans multiple trips starting Tuesday with a Tucson Elks birthday night event. He will then attend a VFW convention in Winslow and a Sunday reception in Nogales honoring Sonora’s acting Gov. Horacio Lobarzo. He also will visit Flagstaff for a July 31 regents meeting.
The United Nations gave Jews and Arabs until 5 a.m. Wednesday to accept or reject a cease fire in Palestine. Count Folke Bernadotte said a rejection or conditional acceptance would send the matter back to the Security Council. The U.S. sent 21 officers as truce observers and awaits Israel and Arab replies by Wednesday. Arab forces advanced toward Wilhelma near Tel Aviv as Egyptian planes bombed the area and Isdud saw heavy fighting.
The first review of the 43rd wing since its activation at Davis Monthan AFB will be held shortly after 7 am Saturday. Col James C Selser Jr commands the unit as Brig Gen Luther W Sweetser Jr leads the 304th reserve air division with about 500 reservists from Southern California. Local officials and civic leaders are invited to the ceremony. Gen Carl Spaatz and Maj Gen Roger M Ramey may attend, but arrival by Saturday is not confirmed.
Senate Republican policy committee forecast serious doubt that Congress can finish its work by the June 19 adjournment. Taft said the body will act on four bills including the draft measure, and then consider aid for a European defense alliance, a reciprocal trade agreement, and a long-range farm program.
