Supreme Court Protects Pupfish Habitat in Death Valley

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the United States can block Nevada ranchers from draining water from Devil's Hale in Death Valley to protect a one inch pupfish living in a limestone cave. Justices said land acquisitions by the United States for public use include water rights necessary to preserve the land and its wildlife. The case centers on Francis and Marilyn Cappaert's 1968 pumping of groundwater to irrigate a 12,000 acre Nevada ranch.
