Installment debt soars after controls end in six months
In Washington on June 2, Americans added 1.282 billion dollars of debt in six months as time payment controls expired last November. Installment credit climbed to a record 6.736 billion at early May while total consumer credit reached 13.596 billion. The rise stemmed from relaxed down payments and terms, with per-month increases far above prior controlled periods. A Reserve Board survey warned one in four families may overspend this year using credit or savings. In agriculture, soil programs expanded with 16,000 Nebraska farms fully developed and 7,000 seeking technical help.
