Sleeping Sickness Reported In Prescott Horses

An outbreak of sleeping sickness in horses, first reported in Maricopa County, was found in Prescott. Two cases were reported to Dr George F Scheetz, the local veterinarian, who noted the horses appeared to have sleeping sickness and advised vaccination for owners.

Opium Ring Busted in Phoenix Raid Four Arrests Made

Phoenix agents raided a basement opium den at 119 East Madison capturing four Chinese suspects and seizing opium, pipes, scales, and gambling equipment. A fifth man, Shorty Wong, 44, owner of a cafe, was detained as ring leader. The operation, led by Earl Smith and Robert W. Lorenz, allegedly valued at over ten million dollars in ten years.

Doctors Fight Among Selves At Kingman Mohave County

In Kingman Mohave county a new Mohave County Health Protective association forms amid disputes with the Mohave County Medical Society. The group claims local doctors delayed surgery and failed to assist county physicians while Dr Arthur A Arnold faces scrutiny from the protective group. End of London dock strike after 25 days

Striking London dockers voted to end the 25 day walkout, with 15 500 workers to return to their jobs at 7 45 am Monday. The break followed Britain’s labor government detaining three foreigners labeled Communist agents and moving to deport them by air.

Californians Bid Low On Route 66 Contract

A low bid of 562000 dollars for five and a half miles of U S highway 66 between Flagstaff and Ash Fork was submitted by the Basich brothers of San Gabriel California. Phoenix July 22. Municipal housing projects operated as nonprofit functions cannot be charged sales taxes by the state. The attorney general cites Arizona Supreme Court rulings that revenues from such municipal functions are not subject to sales taxes.

Private Club Heads Released On Gaming Charges

Three managers of exclusive clubs pleaded innocent in justice court to conducting gaming after Wednesday raids by Sheriff Jerome P. Martin. Their trial was set for Sept. 13 and they were released without bond. Deputies searched eight clubs across the city, confiscating 16 slot machines from the three clubs and four more from the Southern Latin American club. Joe Corral of the Southern Latin American club faces a separate gaming charge.

New Speed Limits Posted On Highways

Phoenix July 22 A program of setting new speed limits on heavily traveled Arizona highways is now being carried out. Ranges from 35 to 60 miles per hour. A Glen Smoot traffic safety director said new limits have been set between Phoenix and Wickenburg. Recommendations for U S highway 66 postings across the northern sector will be submitted to the state highway commission soon. Limits are based on road conditions congestion and factors not apparent to motorists.

Police Chief Probes LAPD Link to Cohen Shooting

Los Angeles police chief William Worton investigates a claim that members of his department may have engineered the near fatal shooting of racketeer Mickey Cohen.
