Gen. George C. Marshall supports the Atlantic pact and its defense pledge as Congress prepares to vote. He says the mutual treaty will strengthen U S security with 11 Atlantic partners and emphasizes decisions rest with each nation. Marshall spoke at length from his Leesburg home.
Fred C. Goodell announced the 1948 49 fiscal year ended with a cash balance of 8 8 million in the treasurer s office and 637 361 in securities. He attributed the surge largely to the sale of several bond issues and said the funds are allocated to various county accounts.
Washington July 21 UP The U S public health service reports 1016 new infantile paralysis cases in the week ended July 16 up from 684 the prior week. Year to date 4895 cases vs 3601 last year. Nine states exceed 100 cases with New York rising from 16 to 72 in the latest week. Indiana also shows a sharp increase.
The U S weatherman called Wednesday rain in Tucson a hangover and predicted showers for the mountains only on Thursday. Rainfall totals on Thursday morning showed .28 inch by 1 p m at the airport and .22 inch at the University of Arizona site, with lighter amounts elsewhere. Temperatures rose toward the mid to upper 80s and 90s, and the forecast suggested a mostly clearing pattern by Thursday night and Friday.

Air Transport Associates plane crashed after takeoff from Boeing Field killing seven people and injuring 32. Captain Amos Heacock credited engine trouble and nearby power lines, with ATA workers and pilots urging underground lines. Rescue crews fought fire as investigators probed the cause.
The Arizona state hospital board will meet July 25 in Phoenix to select a new chairman after Dr Jeremiah Metzger’s resignation. Wes A Townsend of Eloy, appointed by Gov Garvey, will attend, marking his first board meeting.
Sheriff Jerome P. Martin raided the South side Democratic club headquarters and other venues for gambling. No machines found at 2000 S Fourth Ave, but four slot machines and a one ball machine were seized at the Southern Latin American club 15 W 26th St. Warrants were issued for three club managers. Confiscations followed raids that netted 16 machines at three private clubs Wednesday night.
President Truman said Vaughan has permission to testify if called before the Senate committee probing five percenters. He declined to comment on any medal ceremony, defended his policy against outsiders influencing contracts, and suggested Vaughan was not involved in related military investigations. Hoey raised possible testimony, while Truman offered no hint on Murthy succession.
The Senate plans to finish debate on the North Atlantic pact with votes on reservations and the treaty set for 4 p.m. The executive expenditures committee weighs creating a welfare department while subcommittees hear witnesses on rights in response to personal attacks at congressional hearings. The appropriations committee meets in a closed session to discuss funds for stockpiling strategic materials. In the House, debate on the administration farm bill continues and the labor committee reviews an antidiscrimination bill.
Phoenix reports Gov. Dan E. Garvey plans to declare a state of emergency in Cochise and part of Santa Cruz counties to fight a severe grasshopper plague. State Senator Hubert Merryweather urged action to tap the disaster fund, as entomologist J. L. E. Lauderdale warned the Sulphur Springs valley situation is critical.
All softball games scheduled for Thursday night at Santa Rita park were postponed because of wet grounds. The city recreation office announced the change. Class B games at Oury park remain on schedule.
In the American League Raschi and Berra led the Yankees to a 5 to 3 win over Cleveland as Wynn Bear den and Paige held the 8th. Boston and Chicago postponed due to rain. Philadelphia at St Louis scheduled for night doubleheader. In the National League Wehmeier and Erautz led New York past Cincinnati 9 to 8 after a late rally. St Louis beat Boston 15 to 3. Pittsburgh defeated Brooklyn 9 to 6 and Chicago topped Philadelphia 8 to 4 with Dubiel Chipman Hacker Owen Borowy Seminick on the mound.
County Attorney Bryce Wilson announced Elton C. Netherlin as deputy county attorney in Ajo. Netherlin, an Ajo lawyer and businessman, is a University of Arizona graduate and a native of the state. he was recently named to the new county planning board.
Lawmakers after top level atomic talks appear satisfied President Truman will not bypass Congress to share atomic secrets with Britain or Canada. Senator McMahon says Atlantic pact carries no obligation to share know-how and committee will continue review.
Detroit reports the United Auto Workers union files a ten day strike notice with the state labor mediation board against Ford Motor Co. The move signals rising labor tensions as talks likely continue.
Washington to host a preliminary hearing Tuesday on the proposed merger of Arizona Airways and Monarch Airlines. Arizona Airways President H O Rocky Nelson says only Civil Aeronautics Authority approval remains needed for completion of the merger.
