The National Safety Council reports 676 accidental deaths over the three day Independence weekend. Traffic, drownings, and other violent accidents formed the bulk, with California leading drownings. The toll surpasses 1941’s 628 and last year’s 571. no fireworks fatalities were recorded.
Errol Charles of Cincinnati today agreed to defend his world heavyweight title against Gus Lesnevich at Yankee Stadium on August 10. Negotiations closed at a brief meeting between their managers and three officials of the New International Boxing Club. Charles won the N B A version by defeating Jersey Joe Walcott in Chicago on June 22.
President Truman discussed the economy and the government’s finances with congressional leaders. No decision yet on new taxes. a special economic message with proposed programs for price and employment trends is likely to reach Congress early next week or by next weekend.
New York July 5 Vishinsky Andrei Russia's first deputy foreign minister reportedly lost prestige after failures at the Paris foreign ministers conference. He could not reach Premier Stalin by phone and was said to have fallen from Kremlin favor for failing two missions. The aims were to win France's agreement on a pact with Russia and to extract large concessions from the western powers matching Soviet Austrian treaty concessions.
Big Steel and the CIO United Steelworkers resume contract negotiations in Pittsburgh against a 10 day deadline for a possible strike. The 850000 member union seeks a general wage increase and company financed pension and insurance programs. U S Steel rejects pension demands and vows full reply at next meeting.
In an interview at Formosa, Chiang Kai-shek declares he will lead Nationalist China's fight against the Communists and asks the United States to resuscitate its policy of moral support to the government. He warns that unchecked Chinese communism would threaten Asia and risk another world war.
In Washington on July 5, the Senate approved Mrs. Perle Mesta to be minister to Luxembourg. Senator Donnell of Missouri voiced a lone dissent with a loud no, opposing the nomination he criticized. Mesta is described as a close friend of President Truman.
In London on July 5 Churchill told non Communist Poles that freedom forces are advancing on a broad front during Sikorski institute event marking six years since the Gibraltar air crash death of Poland’s wartime exile leader. He spoke at official commemoration.
In Pittsburgh on July 5 miners without a contract returned to work for a three day week ordered by John L. Lewis for eastern miners. About 7,000 Western Pennsylvania soft coal diggers faced idling as talks resume July 12 and July 14 with anthracite operators in Philadelphia. Average earnings on the three day schedule run around 42.15 dollars.
Mrs. Iva Toguri D Aquino known as Tokyo Rose sits passively as Judge Michael J Roche reads the eight count indictment accusing her of wartime broadcasts to U S troops. Jury selection begins with questions on prejudice race creed and prior familiarity with the case. If convicted she could face death or at least five years plus a $10000 fine.
Congress convened July 5 in cramped temporary rooms, with the House in the Ways and Means committee space and the Senate in the old Supreme Court chamber. Public viewing was barred, newsmen crowded, acoustics poor, and desks removed as lawmakers debated the Atlantic Pact. Photographers were permitted to document the unusual session.
Senator Connally urged swift approval of the Atlantic pact to prove free nations will stand together against aggression. He said the 20 year treaty binds the United States Canada and European nations though ratification requires a two thirds Senate vote. Coroner Clark H. Johnson announced an inquest into the death of Margaret Cody Lippincott 17. Eight witnesses including Davis Monthan airmen Staff Sgt Lawrence E Shaver Kenneth Brock George Ushida and Arthur Ferringer were subpoenaed to testify along with Mrs Patricia Shaver Clell Howard Betty Lucille Schneider and a 16 year old waitress. Ben H Clark the train engineer was present at the start of the inquest. Lippincott was struck by a Southern Pacific freight train near Nogales and dragged about 140 feet. The witnesses described a confrontation earlier in the car and Lippincott’s refusal to continue the trip.
At least seven dead and 20 small boats missing after violent wind and rain squall sweep through the New York metropolitan area. Drought and heat persist as storms topple poles, disrupt air travel, and force beachgoers to flee.
