Reno observes July Fourth amid a 2 600 worker walkout touching 20 restaurants and several casinos. Citizens and business leaders staff field kitchens serving roast beef sandwiches for 50 cents, pie and coffee for 15 cents.
An 18 year old soldier Pfc. Gerald Ramey of Olympia saved seven guests from the Lafayette hotel fire in Aberdeen Washington before collapsing. Seven people died and about a half dozen were injured including hotel manager Paul Myhr. Fire Chief C A Borum said the blaze spread rapidly as guests escaped in their night attire.
Senator George of Georgia proposed drastic cuts to four major funding bills including Marshall Plan and military appropriations as the only practical method to avoid a large deficit. He backs a McClellan bill that would force President Truman to trim spending, warning the Senate faces a $1.81 billion deficit and about $27 billion tied up in current bills.
Forrest Warren, 71, San Diego Daily Journal columnist known for his May 17 cancer confession, died peacefully at home. He aimed to boost cancer research and had raised about $35,000. Survivors include his widow Nina and three children.

Senate scrutiny looms as critics call the move illegal and harmful to public welfare. Negotiations continue with Northern western operators and U S Steel at White Sulphur Springs and Bluefield while miners stay on a partial holiday.
Philadelphia and Brooklyn played with Brooklyn springing to a 7 to 1 victory as Simmons Konstanty Trinkle and Bicknell shared the pitching duties for the Phillies while Lopata Roe and Campanella handled the catching duties for the Dodgers.

A massive Willcox gasoline fire and a 20 ton semitrailer crash hit the east end of town after a gas delivery sparked flames at Gear's Red Arrow station. Vehicles damaged include a 1935 Ford coupe and Melvin Dellinger’s Plymouth. one truck driver was injured lightly. Telephones damaged as lines burned. services restored soon after.
A newly married couple is under investigation in the slaying of oilman W. A. Thornton in Pecos Texas. Sheriff Gaither of Amarillo says photos will be shown to witnesses who saw a mysterious couple with Thornton the night he died. The pair were arrested on a check passing charge and fit the description of those wanted for questioning.
