Planes and armored columns bolster a punitive expedition against 4,000 Berber tribesmen east of Oued Zem after raids that slaughtered about 80 French, with forces from Rabat and Meknes joining in the mountain campaign. French say no mass executions will occur despite heavy action.
A flaming C119 Flying Boxcar crashed near Charleston Air Force Base in Liberty Park, destroying three houses and killing nine or more airmen and civilians. The base said five of 11 crew members died. six survivors were not believed seriously injured. Fire destroyed the wreckage and scattered flaming debris over a wide area.
The United Campaign goal is $712,278 announced after a morning meeting with 21 participating groups including the Red Cross and Jewish Community Center. Drive runs Oct 11 to Nov 15. Separately, a C119 crash near Charleston killed crew members and injured civilians, with a fire response aiding early containment.
About 40,000 United Auto Workers walked out against 18 International Harvester Co plants in six states as a five year pact expired at 12:01 a.m. CDT. Nearly 30,000 had already joined the walkout earlier at nine plants. Negotiations continued after the deadline with plans to resume later today. Major plant concentrations lie in the Chicago area and the Illinois Quad Cities region.
President Eisenhower promised broad federal help for northeastern flood areas after surveying the damage. He offered to convene a special session if needed and urged generous Red Cross gifts while Hayden outlined funds and loan options from disaster relief, reconstruction, and agency programs. Gov Frank Clement ordered a three way probe into a freight train school bus crash at Spring City Tennessee that killed 10 children and injured 30. The bus driver said he prayed but the train hit from behind as the town of 1725 faced tragedy.
Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, released from prison after two years as a war criminal, flies to Washington to press for release of Japanese prisoners from World War II crimes. He seeks leniency after ten years and will meet U S officials on rearmament. 577 prisoners remain in Sugamo prison in Tokyo, including seven Class A offenders linked to Pearl Harbor.
Vice President and Mrs Nixon will visit the Near East and Africa late this fall at the request of President Eisenhower. The trip underscores U.S. diplomatic aims during the autumn season.
