French troops and Foreign Legionnaires answered rebel raids with tanks and planes in Morocco after a violent weekend that left about 1,000 dead. Sporadic rioting spread across cities, with Casablanca among affected areas.

Arizona Corporation Commission opened testimony on a request from ten trucking companies for a 15 percent intrastate rate increase. Chairman William T. Brooks adjourned early due to illness and left proceedings to A. E. Laterin who stood in to preside as the hearing progressed.
Heavy weekend storms drenched Santa Cruz County with over five inches of rain. The Benson to Patagonia train was stranded near Elgin after track undermining and floodwaters. Crews fought floods to repair a Patagonia bridge but a new flash flood yesterday washed away progress. Tenacious floods left 38 teens stranded at Harshaw, a truck demolished downstream, and five county workers uninjured after their dump truck was hit by a flood near State Senator Neilson Brown’s ranch.
United States and major European allies outline proposals to test Soviet aims for a lasting East West settlement. Plans include UN disarmament subcommittee in New York August 29, Adenauer's Moscow trip September 9, and four power talks in Geneva October 27. Russians meanwhile show cautious gestures by hosting diplomats and releasing three Americans desertion cases.
Rep. Rhodes and Rep. Holt asked the Soviet government for permission to visit the Baltic satellite republics Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. If granted, Rhodes would be the first American to visit since their incorporation by Russia. A U S official said there has been no consideration of military action against Lt. Guy H. Bumpas over statements attributed to him by Communist propagandists. Bumpas, piloting a Jackson Mississippi flier, was killed when the unarmed plane was shot down near the neutral zone last week. The official stressed the Red statement misquotes Bumpas as denying a routine flight and said no questioning under Eisenhower's conduct code is planned.
RAF Group Captain Peter Townsend did not send a token gift to Princess Margaret for her 25th birthday. British press noted ongoing romantic interest, but Townsend’s divorce bars marriage until after she is free to wed. The princess celebrated with a Balmoral barbecue and church visit on her milestone day.
