Vance urges Senate to back Panama Canal treaties
Secretary of State Cyrus Vance challenged Reagan's claim of a fatal flaw and urged Senate approval of the Panama Canal treaties. He warned rejection would harm U.S. Panama relations, Latin American standing, and canal security, while noting the accords serve U.S. and Panamanian interests and promote human rights. He called for thorough examination to avoid a later partisan debate.

Gun maker slows down production in Ithaca
Ithaca gun maker Ithaca Gun Co lays off 75 of its 225 workers for the third time in a year citing an unexplainable slump in the firearms market. The furloughs begin with no recall until late November as demand for shotguns and large bore rifles declines nationwide. Spokesman James Kirstof attributed the slowdown to weak sales.
