Arizona Co op to mine coal for Cochise power plant expansion

The Arizona Electric Power Cooperative plans a 32 million dollar coal mine expansion near Gallup New Mexico to feed a Cochise plant adding 350000 kilowatts, with 100 car trains delivering 10000 tons twice weekly. PD contracts for 100000 kilowatts for Morenci Mine. first coal train due next April, full operation by mid 1979.

Magma lays off 50 at Superior mine

Magma Copper reports 50 workers laid off at its Superior mine, reducing local employment to about 1,000. At San Manuel, a move to cut GM jobs should finish by Nov. 7, with total San Manuel employment around 4,000. Overall, more than 6,000 Arizona copper workers idled will shrink by 2,300 as Sierrita and Esperanza reopen near Tucson.
