Teen minimum wage vote narrows with one vote margin
In Washington the House approved raising the federal minimum wage from 2.30 to 2.65 next year 2.85 in 1979 and 3.05 in 1980 with a 211 to 289 vote on the youth differential after a long debate. Speaker O'Neill cast the deciding vote to break a tie. The measure kept a separate youth wage provision and rejected indexing viewed by some as inflationary. About 52 million Americans are covered by the minimum wage law with three million earning at or near the minimum. The House also exempted full-time babysitters from the wage rules and maintained several other exemptions including amusement parks and certain farm work.
