The President was elected an honorary member of the Locomotive Union at today’s meeting, reflecting ceremonial esteem for his support of railway workers. The event crowned Mr Roosevelt with the union title during the gathering.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected an honorary member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen in Chattanooga. He attended an executive session, was escorted to the auditorium, and received a pass to the meeting amid cheers. The gathering praised his presence for organized labor and commended the immigration appointment of Sargent.
In Arlington South Dakota on September 8 the Populist farmers posted notices along the private train of H R McCulloch and Martin Hughitt who hosted Theodore Roosevelt Jr causing the party to abandon prairie chicken hunting and prompting railway officials to move the train. When Roosevelt sought a drink at a farm house dogs were set upon him and word spread for vigilant trespass notices. Hughitt then moved the hunt north to Redfield where two days will be spent.
D. I. Peters of Cleveland claimed wealthy backers including Mark Hanna John Corrigan Rockefeller and others funded his bond on Harqua Hala in Maricopa County. He failed to meet bond requirements and Hubbard cancelled the bond. Peters reportedly paid no men or bills and may have left the country.
Campaign committee members named to conduct the campaign include Amos O'Keiff of Tucson W B Cleary of Phoenix Frank T Pomeroy of Mesa Henry D Ross of Prescott Fred Leonard of Chloride and others in Maricopa Pima Mohave and Yavapai counties. Chairman Webb of the Democratic Territorial committee announced the appointments.
Ex-President Grover Cleveland's daughter Ruth narrowly escaped injury in Buzzards Bay Massachusetts when a dogcart pony reared and fell. Fred C. Small the Assistant Postmaster restrained the frightened animal as Ruth and her grandmother Mrs Pierrin slid to safety unhurt.
At Bethel church Mercer county Rich art League and Lily Pelley wed amid objections. Two brothers of the bride allegedly attacked the groom but he repelled them, tossing them from an adjacent window before the ceremony concluded.

In Cannon Street, Cleveland, a woman Elizabeth Evans died after two weeks of erysipelas while her 12 year old son and 15 year old daughter lay starving beside her. Neighbors found no food or fuel in the flat. the children were revived by doctors and placed under care as the morgue took the mother. The husband, a steel mill worker, left two years ago and is believed to be in Wheatland, Pennsylvania. Neighbors will assist the children.
In Cuiiacao on September 8 H O Havemeyer and allies reportedly gained a controlling stake in beet sugar plants with 9000 tons daily capacity, part of a plan to consolidate into a single company. The move aims to limit competition and reduce profit margins for the American Sugar Refining Company as European refiners expand, with 3000 European raw-sugar firms and 180 refiners this year.
Jackson attorney Charley Byrd shot and killed George Smith in Frozen at 10 this morning after Smith approached him near the platform. Byrd, fleeing into the woods, had been defending Bud Bohannan in a murder indictment in Brethitt Circuit Court. Warrants issued. pursuit ongoing with uncertain chances of capture.
Frank Saunders of Whittier was felled by a rock cave in Santiago canyon while inspecting a coal outcrop with S. J. Adams also of Whittier. A massive rattlesnake’s stare allegedly froze Saunders, preventing movement as tons of earth collapsed. Adams freed him and the snake was killed.
The United States Treasury holds 573,936,194 in gold, a record surpassing prior totals and near the peak Russia reached years ago when resuming gold payments. Since July 1, 1901, the reserve rose by 79,087,897, signaling strong prosperity and confidence in economic stability.
In Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania on September 8 striking Italian miners Portain and Vancostello were accosted near the Harry E Colliery by strike sentries who mistook them for nonunion workers. Vancostello was shot in the leg and beaten fatally. His companion suffered severe injuries and life remains despaired of. Coal and iron police officer Hiram Fisher was also assaulted by a crowd of strikers after being held up. he fired at the crowd, wounding two women, and was later locked up as a foreign crowd milled outside overnight.
In Newburg New York on September 8 an extraordinary race between a bay horse hitched to a light express wagon and a fast freight ended with the horse killed. The animal, frightened when the driver was away, outran the locomotive until navigating a rock gorge where the horse’s hoofs slipped and the train crushed it against the rocky wall. The wagon was crushed and express items damaged.
J K Murrell, ex member of St Louis municipal assembly who fled to Mexico after bribery charges tied to street railway franchise doodling, returned to the city and faced the grand jury. Warrants issued for eighteen former and present delegates charged with bribery and fifteen with perjury.
